D6.1.2 - Standardisation activities report

Description of the deliverable content and purpose

This document summarises the activities carried out in the e-SENSE project in order to link its objectives and vision within different standardisation bodies.
In the radio systems arena, emerging technologies need considerable amount of standardisation activities prior to its exploitation phase, due to traditional application oriented bandwidth allocations. This strict spectrum regulation approach has been opened since the mid 80s, with the so called ISM (Industrial Scientific and Medical) bands allocation, which in fact are being used for any kind of unlicensed radio communications systems, fostering the competitiveness among them and shortening the time to market of new developments.
That approach has led to the proliferation of proprietary solutions for different applications, but also to the generation of several industrially led standards, in which the time to market has been drastically reduced e.g. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee, etc, being the appropriate forums for the introduction of IP innovative vision, and the focus of e-SENSE project.
As stated in D6.1.1, among the different levels in which e-SENSE could interface with standardisation bodies, ZigBee is seen as the global system concept standard which best suits the scenarios developed in e-SENSE, and therefore has been in the main target of standardisation activities carried out in the project. However other standardisation efforts have been carried out, as contributions to IEEE P802.15.4 (Working Group for Wireless Personal Area Networks WPANs).
This deliverable contain a recompilation of contributions and presentations to the above mentioned standardisation bodies, in order to integrate the vision of low power short range mesh networks developed in the e-SENSE project.
In the framework of this project Telephonic has joined the ZigBee Alliance (according to the main focus shown in D6.1.1 and its role of Task 6.1 leader), in order to contribute to the new versions of the ZigBee standard.
On the other hand, the intrinsically open standard environment in which e-SENSE technology is focused, e-SENSE reinforced its role through public dissemination (which is gathered in D6.3.2), and hence the creation of awareness on e-SENSE results and vision among the related industry, as stated in [1]. With the provision of this industrial awareness on e-SENSE technology, some of the ideas can become a de-facto standard if enough industrial agreement is reached.
