D1.4.3 - Report on economic and strategic analysis

Description of the deliverable content and purpose

This deliverable complements the end-to-end human and social sciences approach that supports the design process in e-SENSE project. It concludes the scenario based design and user centric approaches by exploring the business scenarios for the most promising application scenarios that have been identified within the e-SENSE scenario portfolio through prior acceptability studies. It reports the work that has been performed in cooperation with industrial partners of the e-SENSE project in order to study the business aspects of these selected scenarios. An original and innovative method has been developed by the e-SENSE researchers to explore business models and market opportunities for the e-SENSE applications scenarios. Two of the most promising application scenarios have been extracted from the e-SENSE scenario portfolio according to the results of the user centric studies that have been previously achieved within the project:- skiing scenario in the personal application space- logistics scenario in the industrial application spaceThe scenarios are studied in cooperation with industrial experts from the e-SENSE project who have the expertise in the addressed domains: Telefonica and Thalès.In addition, the study on the skiing application scenario was complemented with further input gathered through interviews with business actors of a ski resort.Four business scenarios are proposed and detailed.- The study on the skiing application scenario leads to realistic business scenarios that could be implemented by industrial actors in ski resorts with the support of the local business actors. It consists in detecting and filming skier’s actions on the ski trails and to sell them the relevant video samples via mobile phone (e.g. SMS) and websites. Two different but complementary business scenarios are derived: the first one describes the value chain for services delivery to the clients (end-users) of the ski resorts while the second business scenario describes the value chain to provide services to the business actors of the ski resort.- The study on the logistics application scenario leads to interesting application with business opportunities that consist in tracking high-value not environmentally sensitive goods to ensure security. Two business scenarios are derived: the first one describes the value chain to provide services to customers in software companies and the second one describes the value chain to deliver services to the logistics companies. These scenarios are confronted and enriched with regard to in the field interviews with the business actors of the envisioned application scenarios and with regards to D1.4.1 results. The initial e-SENSE application scenarios are impacted and modified by these business scenario studies since the involved industrial experts and business actors reveal key business issues that require improvements to make the applications viable and realistic. This approach highlights how it is important to consider simultaneously usage and business issues during the design process of new applications based on advanced technology. The methodological development is also a significant outcome of this deliverable since the method for the exploration of business models of technological innovations has been improved by this study. In particular it developed its combination with a global scenario based design approach and it demonstrated a new method to involve business actors concurrently with users at the very early stages of the application scenario design.
