D4.1.1 - Distributed Services ConceptDescription of the deliverable content and purpose The purpose of this deliverable is to capture the starting point and direction of the work being carried out in Task 4.1, from problem statement to technical specification of the e-SENSE solution. To this end, the report contains a structured description of the state-of-the-art in timing and synchronisation, localisation, and service discovery for sensor networks. A particular focus is given to defining a taxonomy for each of these areas, providing a systematic description of the strategies present in the literature to address these areas. Leading approaches are then briefly described, as typical examples within the defined taxonomy. Based on the requirements derived from WP1 defined scenario and use cases, a number of areas which are not adequately covered in the state-of-the-art are identified, which provide the focus for approaches developed within the e-SENSE project. The report moves on to describe an e-SENSE approach for each of the technical areas, followed by technical specifications of these approaches, which will be evaluated in the second year of the project.
