D3.1.1 - PHY Optimisations for Ultra-Low power

Description of the deliverable content and purpose

This deliverable intends to provide the PHY optimisations that have been developed to comply with the e-SENSE project expectations.

It includes the previous IR3.1.0 delivered at M3: this first deliverable was a state-of-the-art of available RF chips designed to be compliant, or be closely compliant, to the IEEE 802.15.4 standard and UWB low data rate impulse radio as it is intended to be defined in the IEEE 802.15.4a upcoming standard. It has been updated as new chips have emerged on the market since its release and a table of comparison was added.

This document also presents the results that have been obtained during the design phase of the IEEE 802.15.4 compliant chip called “LetiBee”. These results come from link level as well as silicon level simulations: most of the RF impairements were taken into account to evaluate implementation losses as precisely as possible and therefore avoid overspecifying the different blocks. Part of the simulation results are presented there. The chip was designed by Leti for the 2.4 GHz band and is compared with state-of-the-art implementation as far as possible. The steps towards the second version of the chip architecture are also discussed.

Final, this document presents the studies for UWB low power and the framework to model energy versus performance tradeoffs. The goal is to use the energy model into system simulations. In particular, an analysis of the performance was done using the BAN channel measurements and modelling done at IMEC and highly valuable with regard to e-Sense BSN scenarios.
