D1.2.1 - Scenarios and Audio Visual Concepts


Description of the deliverable content and purpose

This deliverable represents the most up to date collection of scenarios that are considered within the e-SENSE project. The main two objectives of this deliverable are:

  • Firstly, it presents the work of WP1 (in cooperation with e-SENSE industrial partners) on e-SENSE use cases and scenarios for three different application spaces ? the personal application space, the community application space and the industrial application space. The use cases and scenarios are based on the e-SENSE concept, i.e., the usage of wireless sensor networks to capture context information as a basis for meaningful and user-adaptive services and applications. This deliverable depicts how e-SENSE will enrich the users’ lives, enhance health service provisioning and improve industrial processes. The scenarios will be expressed in pictographic and video forms.
  • The second objective is to present our work on audio-visual concepts. Audio-visual demonstrations will highlight the e-SENSE concept in a very vivid way ? as movies with flash animations. For each application space one audio-visual demo will be produced in two versions. In a public version, the demo will show how e-SENSE can affect many aspects and situations of everyday personal, public and professional life.

In a study version, e-SENSE researchers will investigate the users’ expectations towards a context aware system, their acceptance and the usefulness of the e-SENSE applications in various situations. The audio-visual demos for each application space are derived from the scenarios presented in this document.

This deliverable describes the scenarios in a user-centric fashion as it focuses on the benefits of e-SENSE to the user. Additionally, the preparation of the audio-visual demonstrations for the public and for user studies is reported. By highlighting the user and usage perspective, the deliverable complements D1.3.1 [1], which focussed on setting e-SENSE functional requirements, i.e., the functional decomposition and characteristics of the system. In addition, D1.2.1 will form an input to Task 1.4 (Sociological, Psychological and Economic Impact) as the audio-visual concepts described here will be used for the evaluation of human impact (D1.4.1) and acceptance into society (D1.4.2).

The deliverable is sub-divided into four sections. After this summary, the e-SENSE application spaces and use cases section lists all use cases and scenarios developed so far in the three application spaces. This section introduces a fictional family along with scenarios that depict the impact of e-SENSE applications and services on their life. Many scenarios are enriched by illustrations depicting usage situations where family members use services enhanced by the e-SENSE system.

The section on audio-visual concepts describes the development and realisation of the three audio-visual demonstrations to be produced in the project. The audio-visual demos for the personal application space are produced first, and will serve as a communication material for the project as well as test material for acceptance studies. The structure and format of the audio-visual demos are introduced with a storyboard.

In the final section on related research, we report on the scenarios of other projects related to e-SENSE. The core scenarios of those projects are discussed while the differences and novelty of e-SENSE scenarios are highlighted.
