D1.1.2 - Report on architectural vision

Description of the deliverable content and purpose

The main objective of the e-SENSE project is to contribute to the evolution and definition of the future Ambient Intelligent Mobile Systems integrating ubiquitous Wireless Sensor Networks in B3G mobile systems. The project is focusing on the description and understanding of what “context” is, and how to capture it. The e-SENSE project will concretize the “context notion” through the development of an architecture for WSN based applications.

e-SENSE added value

The “context awareness” is a critical issue for the technological, psycho-sociological and business research in e-SENSE project. The project is focusing on the description and understanding of what “context” is and how to capture it, while mobile ambient intelligence applications are relying on the ability of Wireless Sensor Networks to capture the user’s context. The envisaged e-SENSE architecture will have the capability to observe and interact with physical phenomena in real time, and with a fidelity that was previously unobtainable.

The architecture delivered by e-SENSE will be based on a full user needs assessment and will result in a thorough user requirements catalogue in order to meet user’s expectations.

The challenge of e-SENSE sociologists and psychologists is to understand what social and psychological context is available from a mobile perspective. Therefore, enabling the e-SENSE architecture to capture the social and psychological context will ensure a better unobtrusiveness, usability, usefulness and user acceptance of WSN based applications. The objectives are to enhance user’s quality of life, well being, leisure and working conditions by providing applications in a meaningful way.

The e-SENSE research and development will support the European competitiveness in mobile and wireless communication systems for the future Information Society. Through the applications to be considered within e-SENSE project, it is intended to define business cases in order to identify and assess the potential benefits of e-SENSE to business key actors.

Application spaces and themes

Three applications spaces and themes have been defined in order to build the scenarios which will support the evaluations of the e-SENSE system’s benefits to users and to business actors.

Application Space

Personal Services

Community Services

Industrial Services

Theme

Lifestyle Assistant

Wireless Healthcare

Remote Asset Monitoring

Use Cases

1. Mood Based services

2. Entertainment

3. Nutrition

4. Wireless Hospital

5. Residential health monitoring

6. Emergency Coordination

7. Store of the future

8.Food Processing tracking

The use cases focus on the description and understanding of the “context” specificities in each application space. These use cases are developed in order to optimize the benefits of e-SENSE to the end users, to the professional users, to business actors and to the technological knowledge in the area of Ambient Intelligence Mobile Systems. Psychological and sociological methods and consideration of the user requirements will ensure a usercentric development of the e-SENSE architecture regarding meaningful applications. The derived scenarios will demonstrate the capability of the e-SENSE system to sense and interact spontaneously with user’s activities and needs with an improved accuracy to the real context.
